Veteran's Day Plaza Presence
Exactly 1 year ago Occupy Gainesville hosted events all day in Bo Diddley Plaza to commemorate Veteran's Day and continued past midnight in a peaceful sit-in. Recently, it has come to our attention that some GPD officers are again being rude to plaza residents, who are members of our extended community. As a showing of solidarity with our friends in the plaza and to celebrate our 2nd veterans day here - members are encouraged to gather at midnight for an informal meeting and sleep-over. Bring your warm clothes and sleeping bags and wear your Occupy Gainesville T-shirts. The point is to let GPD know that this is still OUR (the people's) plaza.
Picnic in the Park
All OG participants and former participants and supporters are invited to come out for a relaxing mid-day picnic at Northeast Park, 501 NE 16th Ave this coming Saturday, Nov 17th. We will be joining with Laura's regular Kickball Saturday, so bring your football, baseballs, frisbees and the kids. We will be grilling some burgers and veggies. Bring a covered dish and join us. 11 am - 1 or 2 pm.
Walmart Worker Solidarity Protest/ Leftover Thanksgiving Potluck
Brave employees of Walmart across the nation have been demanding fair labor practices and have threatened to strike on Black Friday, the busiest shopping day of the year. In solidarity with their struggle, Occupy Gainesville will hold a sign holding protest of Walmart policies and it's mistreatment of workers from 5:30-7:30 pm in front of Butler Plaza Walmart (public sidewalk). Some of us will park at the Ayers Medical Plaza lot on Univ Ave at NW 7th St and carpool over. After the protest, we will return and have a Leftover Thanksgiving Dinner potluck at the JAM (and bask in the glow of having shamed yet another evil monster corporation). Join us! Sign making will be this Wed at 6 pm at the CMC courtyard.
Nancy would like to say she is grateful for her son, who is 22 years old today. Coincidentally, Ilene's mom is celebrating her 84th birthday - also today. Coral's mom celebrated her birthday last Saturday.
Everyone talked about the outstanding efforts at relief organizing being done by Occupy Sandy, a coalition of Occupy participants in NY, who are distributing donations and providing services to the victims of Hurricane Sandy. They have registered 20,000 volunteers as of this week!!
