Occupy Gainesville Light Brigade
The OGLB is getting very active. The most recent display was at the Justice for Trayvon Martin Speakout sponsored by SDS and Dream Defenders in Bo Diddley Plaza on Tuesday, Feb 26th. The letters spelled out "I AM TRAYVON" and a photo made the cover of the Alligator. Upcoming messages being considered are "FREE BRADLEY MANNING" and "DON'T DRONE ME BRO". David suggested we try holding the letters on the little hill facing the intersection near the overpass. There are issues with batteries, as they are very expensive and sometimes there is an uneven brightness to the letters. There will be more discussion at the next workshop. Nancy reported that a working group of Occupy Eugene, Oregon would like us to spell out the message "WOMEN AMPLIFIED" for them and send them the photo, since they don't have a light brigade of their own.
Proposal - Photograph a lighted message in solidarity with Occupiers in Oregon. Consensus passed.
New Working Group - Drones Over Gainesville
Participants discussed the sinister CIA Drone warfare and the fact that there are currently 5 manufacturers of drones here in Alachua County. This is an issue that we think should be locally addressed. Zot says that one of the companies states that they do not build armed drones, but ones used to track wildlife or other harmless purposes, but we should verify this as well as looking into the specifics about the other manufacturers. A working group can be formed to investigate these manufacturers and inform the community. David suggested that the first order of business should be to create a policy statement. Annette thought articles might be written for the local papers. Linda has ordered Media Benjamin's book about drones. David, Laura and Scott will serve on this working group. David will set up a Facebook page for it.
Proposal - Working group will be set up to address the issue of drones. Consensus passed.
Other Occupy News
On February 28th, Occupy the SEC, a working group of OWS, filed lawsuits against every federal regulator of Wall Street. It was agreed that this was a pretty awesome move for a group that the corporate-funded media has steadfastly declared dead.
May Day and Allies
May Day 2012 was a big success. One thing it also did was to create an activist coalition, now called When Activists Work Together, to co-ordinate the timing of all our events throughout the year. May Day is on Wednesday this year. It's planning is taking up a lot of the time of the coalition, whose meetings are always posted on the CMC calendar. The next meeting after May Day, which is the June meeting, is very important. Zot encourages everyone to attend and to recruit other groups to do so also. It is important that we affirm our commitment to support their agendas. BIG PUPPETS for May Day - see Lars for details.
InfoBooth/ Plaza Presence/GAs
With warmer months ahead of us, we'll be seeing longer, hotter days. We should consider moving the GA meeting time back up to 7:30 when Daylight Savings Time kicks in. David said that we have been very active lately and should consider going to 2 GAs per week so that people who can't make it on Saturdays can attend during the week. We are seeing some increased participation of existing occupiers, plus we may connect with some new folks at May Day. InfoBooth - Annette would like to build a sort of display board or photo-collage for the InfoBooth to be displayed when we are tabling at events like May Day, Labor Dayz and the Winter Solstice Concert. Karrie should be consulted for artistic input and Xerographic could do the printing. Laura suggested printing the OG logo on shopping bags and selling them for a very reasonable price. We currently have a lot of T-shirts and some will be displayed for sale at the CMC and possibly other places.
Proposal - Saturday GAs will start at 7:30 once we go on Daylight Savings Time. Consensus passed.
Proposal -$50 be approved for the Infobooth display. Consensus passed.
Occupy Grassy Valley in California produces the Occucards; slick and artsy information on postcards covering Occupy topics. They have become the main way we have been distributing information at the infobooth and on bulletin boards on campus and elsewhere. Our stock is running low on some subjects and they have produced some beautiful new ones as well. Annette "passed the hat" and collected $29 from GA participants, and will gather more to order new cards.
*Internet insecurity for activist groups and less privacy for individuals is becoming a concern. Alternatives to Google and facebook were discussed. BING does not promise to be much better. Someone suggested checking into IXQuick. *The futility of working with either major political party makes working outside of government a necessity and accomplishing things this way must be learned. Zot suggested that everyone seeing a need in the community should ask the government for nothing, but instead take care of it on your own. If the media does not direct a fair amount of attention to these efforts, then insist that they do so. This would be a good challenge for everyone to do for 1 year.
