OG Light Brigade
Ilene joined a conference call with other light brigades and luminary groups. There is a national week of action coming up - Tax Evaders. Big corporations are not paying their share of taxes. The actions are being called for by a group called Pay Up Now. We should pick one corporation to focus on and develop a message. Susan suggested Wells Fargo. Ed likes Dodge Ball theme. Chris suggests Saturday, April 13th. Zot likes targeting the company by taking the message to their location. Proposal - Saturday GA at John's devoted to this action, followed by a workday the next day, Sunday. Consensus passed.
Funds are under $800. Chris suggested an event at the JAM or 1982. Ed suggested Education Days, workshops put on by volunteers in exchange for donations. Need to do brainstorming. Annette suggested a working group. Whistler thinks the InfoBooth is important for our presence to be known. Chris will make page and set a meeting. Susan volunteered her house.
This has been a local nightmare issue for so many years. Ed thinks a lemonade stand saying Free Koppers Lemonade would get attention. Susan reported that the last meeting of the City Council had 50 people asking the city for a letter stating that they are not satisfied with the agreement between the EPA and Koppers. They agreed to relocate residents instead of a buy-out. It was unanimously agreed that they will draft a new letter. She asked OG to show support. Zot will let us know when the issue is coming up again before the city.
The main issue with Walmart continues to be it's abusive exploitation of workers. Nancy pointed out that Costco, Target and Trader Joe's provide better pay and benefits and are still profitable companies, proving that Walmart could choose to treat their employees better. No new local action is planned yet.
Ilene reported there was a meeting on Wednesday. Everyone had hoped to locate in the plaza, even though it is a market day, but another group has the plaza booked. So - May Day this year will not be held at the plaza. Currently the plan is to have a parade with puppets and a marching band pass by the plaza and proceed on to the Repurpose project. It seems that the event will just have to be smaller this year. OG has contributed $50 toward expenses, this was dropped off by Annette this week. The InfoBooth will be set up - Chris will help to staff it. Susan will be there getting signatures on a petition for the Land and Water Legacy. The petition can also be at the OG booth.
Toast is staffing the InfoBooth on Thursdays, will need set up while John is gone. Annette will set it up on the next 2 Thursdays. We should make some May Day signs soon. Nancy will volunteer to do a couple hours at the booth on Sunday. It would work if someone else would also take another couple hours on that day. Whistler asked if we should reconsider a small umbrella type set up. Annette said the real limiting factor is attendance, not the style of the booth. Chris said the city seems to be moving forward on the One Stop Homeless Center. She would like to speak at a council meeting and thank them.
